Q1. Solve the following pairs of equations by reducing them to a pair of linear equations :

v) 7x-2yxy=5;8x+7yxy=15

viii) 13x+y+13x-y=34;12(3x+y)-12(3x-y)=-18
Sol. :
i)
12x+13y=2___________(1)
13x+12y=136_________(2)
Let 1x=p and 1y=q then
p2+q3=2
3p+2q=12________________(3)
p3+q2=136
2p+3q=13________________(4)
from equation (3)
q=12-3p2
Put in equation (4)
2p+3(12-3p2)=13
4p+36-9p=26
36-26=5p
10=5p
p=105
p=2
Put in equation (3)
3×2+2q=12
6+2q=12
2q=12-6
2q=6
q=62
q=3
Now
p=1x
2=1x
x=12
and
q=1y
3=1y
y=13

Q2. Formulate the following problems as a pair of equations, and hence find their solutions:
i) Ritu can row downstream 20km in 2 hours, and upstream 4km in 2 hours. Find her speed of rowing in still water and the speed of the current.
ii) 2 women and 5 men can together finish an embroidery work in 4 days, while 3 women and 6 men can finish it in 3 days. Find the time taken by 1 woman alone to finish the work, and also that taken by 1 man alone.
iii) Roohi travels 300km to her home partly by train and partly by bus. She takes 4 hours if she travels 60km by train and remaining by bus. If she travels 100km by train and the remaining by bus, she takes 10 minutes longer. Find the speed of the train and the bus separately.
Sol. :
i)
Let speed in still water is x km/h,
and speed in current is y km/h. 
According to question
[ Time×speed = Distance ]
2(x+y)=20
x+y=10_____________(1)
[ Time×speed=Distance ]
2(x-y)=4
x-y=2______________(2)
By equation (1) + (2)
x+y+x-y=10+2
2x=12
x=6km/h
Put in equation (1)
6+y=10
y=10-6
y=4km/h
Answer :
Speed in still water isx=6km/h, and speed in current is y=4km/h.
ii)
Let a woman finish the work in x days,
and a man finish the work in y days.
One day's work of a woman is 1x,
and a man is 1y.
According to question
2x+5y=14___________(1)
3x+6y=13___________(2)
Let 1x=p and 1y=q
2p+5q=14
8p+20q=1___________(3)
3p+6q=13
9p+18q=1___________(4)

x=18 days, y=36 days.
iii)
Let the speed of train xkm/h,
and the speed of bus ykm/h.
When Roohi travels by train 60km, and by bus 240km.
Travel time 4hr.
60x+240y=4
15x+60y=1___________(1)
When Roohi travels by train 100km, and by bus 200km.
Travel time 4hr10minute=4+1060=4+16=256hr.
100x+200y=256
24x+48y=1___________(2)
Let 1x=p and 1y=q
15p+60q=1
15p+60q-1=0__________(3)
24p+48q=1
24p+48q-1=0__________(4)

Answer :
The speed of the train is 60km/h, and the bus is 80km/h.
