Example :
1) One side of a rectangular field is 12 m and one of its diagonals is 13 m. Find the area of the field .
Solution :
It has right triangle hence by Pythagoras  Theorem
Breadth of rectangle =√ (13)2-(12)2 = 5 m
Area = Length X Breadth
         =  (12   X  5 ) 
         =  60 m2
2) Obtain the area of an isosceles triangle, in which each one of equal sides is 5 m and the third side 6 m.
Solution.
where a =5 , b = 5 , c = 6
          a+b+c             5 + 5 + 6
S = -------------- = ---------------------- = 8

Area = √s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)
         = √8(8-5)(8-5)(8-6) 
         = √144 
         =    12 m2
3)The base of a triangular field is three times its altitude. If the cost of harvesting the field at Rs. 240 per hectare be Rs. 3240, find its base and height.
Solution 
                               Total cost              3240
Area of field = --------------------- = ------------------- hectares
                                Rate                       240

= 13.5 X 10000 = 135000 m2
4) The diameter of the wheel of a car is 140 cm. How many revolutions per minute the wheel make in order to keep a speed of 66 km per hour ?
Solution
Covered Distance in 1 minute
          66X1000X100
=  --------------------------- cm = 110000 cm

5) A rectangular plot is 116 m by 68 m. It has tiles path 2.5 m wide all around it on the inside. Find the area of the path .
Solution 
Area of the plot = 116 X 68 
                          =  7888 m2
Area of the plot excluding the path  
= [(116 - 5) X (68 -51) ]
= 111 X 63
= 6993 m2
